AIREX®, BALTEK®, BANOVA® - Foam and FSC®-certified balsa lightweight solutions for each application requirement

AIREX®, BALTEK®, and BANOVA® constitute the most extensive assortment of lightweight core materials and composites available on the market.

Our research and development departments - not least thanks to close cooperation with our customers - are able to recognize trends early on and can even help set them.

We deliver core materials made of foam and FSC® certified balsa wood in various sizes in order to make the selection easier for our customers. We also have well-established distribution partners at our disposal, to take on first processing steps and create preformed semi-finished goods. This reduces material consumption, storage and transportation costs, and increases precision.

Plantabal S.A and 3A Composites PNG Ltd. are the forest companies of 3A Composites own and manage several thousand hectares of FSC® certified balsa wood plantations in Ecuador (FSC-C019065and Papua New Guinea (FSC-C125018). The growing of our own seedlings as well as several local sawmills guarantee sustainable forest management and continuous availability for industrial-end customers.

AIREX®, BALTEK®, and BANOVA® are more than just products. Whether by themselves or in intelligent combinations, they are always optimal solutions - developed jointly with the customer - for the customer's specific tasks and complex requirements.

AIREX® Structural foam cores

The product name AIREX® is composed of the word AIR and EX for expansion. Air bubbles, which are characteristic for this material, form during the manufacturing process and increase the volume many times over - while the weight remains constant.

Specifically, our AIREX® foam products are composed of 50-96% air. This minimizes the consumption of raw materials as well as weight and costs.

AIREX® rigid foams persuade with their very high mechanical properties and minimal weight. When used as a core material between two thin, stiff face sheets they create sandwich structures that can be more than 50% lighter than conventional structures.

BALTEK® Structural balsa cores

BALTEK® is a structural core material made of a natural, renewable resource - balsa wood. The balsa tree (Ochroma pyramidale) is the fastest growing tree in the world: a seedling will grow into a straight-trunked tree with a height of up to 30 m and a diameter of approximately 45 cm in only 5 to 7 years.
The balsa tree combines various special features:

  • Quick growth: ready to harvest after 5 to 7 years
  • Low medium density
  • High insulating properties
  • High weight-specific mechanical properties

Very little energy is required to process natural balsa wood into structural end-grain core material. Mature trees are felled, cut into squared timber or stripped as veneer, and dried in the oven. The balsa wood is then sorted by quality, physical features, and specific density, and glued to form large blocks. These blocks are cut into end-grain sheets and then processed into one of the many available product sizes.
